Christian Markley was born July 17, 1792, present day location, Elk Lick Township, Somerset Co., Pa. (near Salisbury) in Pennsylvania. He was the son of Jacob and Catherine Markley.

In 1812, Greenville Township, Somerset Co., Pa. he was wed to Margaret (Peggy) Shockey.

Margaret was the Granddaughter of Christopher Shockey, who was born Palaninate, Germany. He immigrated to Franklin Co. Pa. and then to Frederick Co. Maryland. It was in Frederick Co., Maryland on Sept 24, 1793 that Peggy was born to Christian and Mary Welch Shockey.

Christian Shockey was a Revolutionary War Veteran. A little flag flys over his grave in an old cemetary in Salisbury, at the east end of town, on the north side of the road. The stone reads for Christian 1756-1829, and for his wife Mary, 1757-1844.

Christian Shockey served with the 1st Penns. reg under Captain Doyle. That he served all during this war and was present at the surrender of cornwallis at Yorktown. In these military papers, filed in Washington, D.C. where he is applying for bounty lands and for a pension, contains the family Bible record of the children born to Christian and Mary: Valentine born May 5, 1785 William born Thursday the 11th of November 1786 about 9 o'clock in the eve. Christian born the 10th of September 1788 about 2 o'clock PM. Mary born the 14th of November 1790 on Saturday about 6 o'clock AM. Abraham born the 21st February 1793 on Thursday evening 6 o'clock Barbara born Monday the 9th of February 1795 between 7 & 8 Levi born May the 16th 1797 Peggy born the 6th of December1799 Nancy born May 19th 1802 Drucella born Friday the 7th of May 1805 between 9 & 10 o'clock in the afternoon.

Christian and Peggy were the parents of 17 children. Thirteen of these children were born in Garrett Co., Maryland, the last four children born after 1837 were born in Barbour Co., West Virginia, near Phillippi.

In the town of Phillippi stands a covered bridge, the sign above the bridge reads: Phillippi, W. Va. Scene of the first land battle of the Civil War. This bridge erected 1852. Served both North and South in passage of troops and supplies across Mountains into Virginia. It is reported that Christian and perhaps some of his boys helped to build this bridge, a historical site across the Tygart River, that the citizens are trying now to preserve.

On August 27, 1857, Christian passed away and is buried at the Methodist Church Cemetery known as Jeruselum, near Phillippi. He was 65 years of age and had been married to Peggy for 45 years.

Life is far from over for Peggy. She sees the land turned upside down by this Civil War. It would be interesting to know how many of her sons and grandsons were in this war. The county Census during this period of time shows the large number of her children marrying, having families and living nearby. Large and happy family reunions were held often.

After the war had ended, her sons began to speak of the new land opening to be homesteaded in Kansas. Three of her sons, Samuel, Henry and George made this trip west by covered wagon.

West also, goes Grandma Peggy, in 1867, when she is 70 years of age. This tiny litle lady, whose legs were so short that when she sat on a chair her feet would not touch the floor.

Samuel settled in Osage County, Kansas, on the Dragoon Creek, seven miles northeast of Lyndon. It was here that she spent her last days, her death occurred on Feb. 20, 1890. She was buried at Highland Cemetery, Carbondale, Kansas.

The newspaper, "The Osage County Graphic", said: At the time of her death, Margaret was 96 years, 4 months, and 26 days. "Grama was proably the oldest person in Osage County".

Taken from the, "Burlingame Chronicle", at the time of her death is the following:

The death of this old lady calls to our minds an incident in her life which we are inclined to give.

In 1884, the Lyndon Cornet Band was called to Carbondale for some occasion and circumstances were such that the band had to return home on Sunday or remain at Carbondale until Monday. The boys concluded that they would come home on the Sabbath.

The day was a hot, sultry one, and when they arrived at Mr. Markley's place, just north of the Phelon Farm, they stopped for water. While there, the old lady, asked her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Markley, to request the band to play, saying in all of her life she had not heard music by a band of that kind. The band boys, although it was on the Sabbath Day, complied with the request and played a number of sacred and national airs, which she readily recognized, and while they played she sat in the doorway with a grandchild on her knee and great tears wended their way down her aged and wrinkled face. It seemed that the music refreshed her memory of the past and the pleasant memories she seemed to enjoy were more than her kind old soul could stand, and every emotion of her being so respected by thirteen or fourteen young men just on the verge of the prime of life.

This incdent which we and proably all the members of the band at that time will never forget.

After the boys refreashed themselves with another drink of water, her daughter-in-law brought some delicious cake and other delicasies, and we enjoyed an hour of pleasure and refreshments.

Peace be with her, and may the judgement morn be as bright and happy for her as was the eventful Sabath Day to her and to the Cornet Band.
