He was inducted into the military Des Moines, Iowa, Jan 1947. He served in the military during war time Aft 1947. He was decorated while serving in the military Aft 1950. A funeral service for former Junction City resident, Alfred Walter Olson, 62, Liberal, was conducted 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Johnson Funeral Chapel by the Rev. Gerald A. Martin of the First United Methodist Church. Mr. Olson died Friday, April 2 at his home. He was born June 5, 1930 near Dwight to Howard B. and Minnie Wafler Olson. In 1943 he moved to Clear Lake, Iowa, where he attended high school. He joined the Marines in January 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa, and served in the Korean War. He was awarded the Korean Service Medal with one star and was honorably discharged in November, 1951 as a sergeant at San Diego. He moved to Junction City that year and worked as an auto mechanic for Humphrey Coover Chevrolet and the local Ford garage from 1952 to 1955. After that, he worked until 1981 as a salesman for the NAPA Auto Parts Store. Mr. Olson later moved to Ellsworth and then to Liberal, where he was employed until his death as a salesman for the Richard Rose Pontiac Dealership. He was married to Helen J. Peters, June 5, 1953, in Junction City. They were later divorced. Mr. Olson was a member of the Eagles Aerie No. 830, Earl C. Gormley American Legion Post No. 45, the VFW No. 1594, all of Junction City and the Elks Lodge No. 1037 in Junction City and the Elks Lodge in Liberal. He is survived by two daughters, Janette J. Clanton, Julie A. Olson; one son, Michael T. Olson, all of Junction City; his father and step-mother, Howard and Agnes Olson of Alta Vista; one sister, Mary Ellen Long, Clear Lake, Iowa; one brother, Harvey Howard Olson of Ames, Iowa; two grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Minnie Olson, Oct. 8, 1986. The family and friends met from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the Johnson Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in the Dwight Cemetery. Memorial contributions in the name of Alfred Olson may be given to the American Heart Association or the Kansas Lung Association in care of the funeral home.
